Provincial and municipal officials are expected to provide an update Saturday after storm Fiona made landfall in eastern Canada on Saturday morning, bringing severe wind and heavy rain.

The update will be provided by Halifax Mayor Mike Savage, Cape Breton Mayor Amanda McDougall, alongside Bob Robichaud, warning preparedness meteorologist for the Canadian Hurricane Centre, Peter Gregg, president and CEO of Nova Scotia Power, and Troy Webb, acting executive director of maintenance and operations for Nova Scotia Public Works.

They will be joined by Bill Lawlor, director of government relations for the Canadian Red Cross, Christina Lamey, communications and information officer for Cape Breton Regional Municipality and Jason Mew, director for the incident management division of the Nova Scotia Emergency Management Office.

Storm Fiona toppled trees across the region, with some falling onto power lines, cars and houses. There are also multiple reports of blocked or washed-out roads. About 395,000 customers in Nova Scotia were still without power as of 1 p.m. on Saturday.

A hurricane warning has ended in Halifax but as of 11 a.m. ET on Saturday remained in place across other parts of the province. On the Nova Scotia island of Cape Breton, local states of emergency have been declared in Cape Breton Regional Municipality and Victoria County and residents are being told to shelter in place.
