Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Monday evening that the discovery of unmarked graves at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School set off a reckoning for Canadians to begin to make amends and to "not just recognize the impacts that generations of history had on today, but to start to look towards a healing path."

Asked if he'd be willing to commit the tens of millions needed for exhumation and repatriation of what are believed to be children buried at or near former residential schools, Trudeau said that the government would be there for whatever communities needed. Yet he added it would be up to various Indigenous communities to decide how they want to "proceed in the mourning, in the grieving and in the healing," and whatever "communities decide is the right path for them."

The prime minister was also asked about some of the visceral anger heard as Trudeau was visiting the community, and asked if he believes a chant that "all of Canada is stolen Indian land." He said that Indigenous people who "welcomed in settlers in some cases were overrun by settlers in others," and said that the country exists today with a commitment to "always learn from the past and always do better."
