Uganda detains opposition politician urging protests over prices

Al Jazeera, 24 May 2022
An opposition politician in Uganda has been detained, while protesting against high food and fuel prices, for the second time in a week.
This comes after President Yoweri Museveni rejected the idea of subsidies or reducing taxes on fuel.
Ugandan opposition politician Kizza Besigye is used to being arrested.
For more than 20 years, he has demonstrated against the government of President Yoweri Museveni, and challenged him in four elections.
His attempted demonstration also promptly ended in his detention.
For more than 10 years Uganda’s government has tries to stop street protests before crowds can even gather.
Meanwhile the cost of living keeps rising - as it is in many countries but about 40 percent of Ugandans live on less than $2 a day, and cannot afford to pay more.
