n this opening sequence from “In the Heights,” life moves to the beat.

From a manhole cover that acts as a record scratch to the navigation of a map on an iPad, everyday objects become choreographed set pieces. At the scene’s center is Usnavi (Anthony Ramos), who welcomes you into his world and, more important, his neighborhood.

In this video, the director Jon M. Chu discusses some of the details of the shoot, like using a real bodega for exteriors, but for the interiors, creating a bodega on a set.

And about staging the rhythmic finger movements on an iPad? “It’s more difficult than it seems,” he says.
